Graduate Record Examination


The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test, managed and regulated by the Educational Testing Services and is required to be taken by students seeking admission in the graduate schools. The GRE has been developed to evaluate the verbal, analytical and mathematical skills of the applicants. A computer-based GRE revised general test scores are accepted in Singapore. 


Revised General Test comprises of three sections:

Verbal Reasoning

This section evaluates your ability to analyse the written material and synthesize information obtained from it.  It also requires you to study the relationships among component parts of sentences and identify relationships between words and concepts.
  • No. of question: 20
  • Duration: 30 minutes

Quantitative Reasoning

This section measures problem-solving ability, focusing on basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry and data analysis.
  • No. of questions: 20
  • Duration: 35 minutes

Analytical Writing

Evaluates critical thinking and analytical writing skills, specifically your ability to express complex thoughts in a coherent and readable way.
  • Duration: 30 minutes

Results and Scoring

The score scales for each section of the GRE revised General Test are determined. Verbal Reasoning scores are reported on a 130 – 170 score scale, in 1-point increments. Quantitative Reasoning scores are reported on a 130 – 170 score scale, in 1-point increments and Analytical Writing scores are reported on a 0 – 6 score level, in half-point increments. Based on the scaled scores, percentile ranks are determined. Percentile ranks indicate the percentage of examinees that scored below your score.
