Chinese, Malay and Tamil Language Entrance Proficiency Tests

The Chinese Language Entrance Proficiency (CL EPT) Test is designed for applicants who wish to teach Chinese Language in Singapore. The Malay Language Entrance Proficiency (ML EPT) Test is designed for applicants who wish to teach Malay Language, and the Tamil Language Entrance Proficiency (TL EPT) Test is designed for applicants who like to teach Tamil Language in Singapore.

Structure of CL EPT, ML EPT and TL EPT

The CL EPT, ML EPT and TL EPT consist of two parts:

Part 1-Speaking: This part includes a test of oral proficiency. It calls for applicants to read a passage loudly and clearly and also render a short speech without preparing notes on a given theme. 

Part 2- Writing: This part includes a test of written proficiency. It tests the knowledge in grammar-syntax and semantics, lexicon usage and stylistic conventions of the language. Applicants are also asked to write a short composition.

Exemption Criteria

Candidates who satisfy any of the criteria below are exempted from the CL EPT, ML EPT and TL EPT respectively:

CL EPT Exemptions

Applicants holding:
  • An honours degree or pass degree graduates or final year undergraduates in Chinese Language and Literature from UniSIM, Nanyang University, or any other university in Taiwan and PRC.
  • An honours degree or Pass degree with merit or Final year undergraduates in Chinese Studies or Chinese Language from University of Malaya,NTU or NUS..
  • Applicants holding ‘A’ Level pass with at least a Grade C in Higher Chinese or a Grade B in Chinese at the GCE ‘A’ Level Examination.
  • Applicants having a Grade B in H2 Chinese Language and Literature  or in H1 Chinese Language at the GCE ‘A’ Level Examination.
  • Applicants having a Grade A2 in Higher Chinese at the GCE ‘O’ Level Examination.
  • Applicants having a Grade B4 in L1 at the UEC Examination, or a pass grade in CL at Junior Middle Three Level from Taiwan or PRC.
  • Applicants having a Grade B in CL at STPM, or Grade 5 in Chinese at the International Baccalaureate Examination.

ML EPT Exemptions

  • Applicants who have passed with merit or final year undergraduates in Malay Studies from NUS or Honours degree in Malay Studies and Language from any university in Brunei or Malaysia.
  • Applicants who have scored a GCE ‘A’ Level pass with at least a Grade C in Higher Malay or at least a Grade B in Malay at the GCE ‘A’ Level Examination.
  • Applicants having a Grade B in H2 Malay Language and Literature or in H1 Malay Language at the GCE ‘A’ Level Examination.
  • Applicants having a Grade A2 in Higher Malay at the GCE ‘O’ Level Examination.
  • Applicants having a Grade C in ML at STPM, or Grade A2 in ML at SPM.
  • Applicants having a Grade B4 in ML at UEC, or a Grade 5 in Malay at the International Baccalaureate Examination.

TL EPT Exemptions

  • Applicants holding a pass degree in Tamil Language or Literature from UniSIM or any other universities from Tamil Nadu, India.
  • Applicants having an ‘A’ Level pass with a Grade C in Higher Tamil or Grade B in Tamil at the GCE ‘A’ Level examination.
  • Applicants having a Grade B in H2 Tamil Language and Literature at the GCE ‘A’ Level Examination, or Grade B in H1 Tamil Language at the GCE ‘A’ Level Examination
  • Applicants who have scored a Grade A2 in Higher Tamil at the GCE ‘O’ Level Examination.
  • Applicants having scored a Grade 5 in Tamil at the International Baccalaureate Examination.

Registration and Fees

For registration visit Regional Language Centre.
The fee varies from year to year. Check the official website to know about the fee details. Once you’ve paid the fee, an official receipt is issued.

Results

A Statement of Result indicating a ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’ is issued to the applicants via mail. The result is valid for 4 year duration.
