GMAT: An Introduction

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test),  managed and controlled by the Graduate Management Admission Council is a computer-based standardized test in mathematics and the English language for quantifying aptitude to succeed academically in the field of business and management. The main purpose of the GMAT is to measure the mental aptitude and problem solving capabilities of the applier.


The Graduate Management Admissions Test is a four hour test and consists of four sections: the Analytical Writing Assessment, Quantitative, Verbal, and Integrated Reasoning sections.

Analytical Writing Assessment

The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) measures your ability to think critically and to communicate your ideas. The AWA section consists of two essays.

Integrated Reasoning

The Integrated Reasoning section measures your capability to assess information presented in multiple formats from various different sources. 
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • No. of Questions: 12 


The Quantitative section measures your ability to analyze data and draw conclusions using reasoning skills. It consists of questions based on problem solving, i.e. basic algebra, arithmetic and elementary geometry and data sufficiency. 
  • Duration: 75 minutes
  • No. of Questions: 37


 The Verbal section measures your ability to interpret and understand written material and arguments, and correct them as per the standard written English. It consists of questions of the following types: sentence correction, critical reasoning, and reading comprehension.

  • No. of Questions: 41 

Registration Process

To schedule an appointment to take the GMAT in Singapore applicants must make an account at the official GMAT site . Once an account has been established, applicant must click on the "find a test center" button, and enter "Singapore" into the search field. Then two Singapore testing locations listed will pop up. Rescheduling and cancelling test appointments are also done through the same Web site. 


The fee varies from year to year. Check the official website for payment and other necessary details.

Scoring and Results

The results, i.e. an official score report, which includes all four sections and the total scores, is made available to the applicants online and to designated schools that the applicants applied to, within 20 days after the test. The applicants get five scores, i.e. of Verbal, Quantitative, Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA), Integrated Reasoning and Total score.
  • Verbal and Quantitative Scores: The Verbal and Quantitative scores range from 0 to 60. Scores below 9 and above 44 are infrequent.
  • Analytical Writing Assessment Score: The AWA score can range from 0 to 6 in half point intervals. Writing scores are determined individually from the scores for the multiple-choice sections of the test and have no effect on the Verbal, Quantitative, or Total scores.
  • Integrated Reasoning: The Integrated Reasoning score can range from 1-8. 
Total GMAT Score
Total GMAT scores range from 200 to 800. 

Special Accommodation

For Special test arrangements, the candidate must take permission from Graduate Management Admission Council. These special sittings as a result of medical disability or religious reasons are made available only if the candidate provides the evidence to support the request.
